On religious tolerance.

From Daily Times

LAHORE: Last Tuesday, Pakistani President Gen Pervez Musharraf did something, and also said something, which is rare in the political history of this Islamic Republic. He visited a Hindu temple in Karachi and said, “Places of worship of all religions, including Hinduism, were an integral part of the culture of Pakistan and its geographical history. Maintaining such properties in good condition is a government priority in order to turn them into sites of bonding between religions,” Sudheendra Kulkarni writes in the Indian Express newspaper.

Hmm. This is interesting. Has the great president ever visited the temple at Manora, an island off Karachi? The temple there till 6 years ago was being used as a public lavatory. Don't judge a book by its cover. In related news two Christians were sentenced to 15 years for allegedly burning the Holy Quran. Please note the emphasis on allegedly.

Why I love Wikipedia...

Musharraf in the media

In the Time 100 Poll 2006 of "The People Who Shape Our World", he is currently ranked at number thirteen. In September of 2006, he became the first sitting president of a country to appear on the The Daily Show.[21].

In a list titled "The World's 10 Worst Dictators" prepared by Parade magazine in 2005, Pervez Musharraf is placed at number 7 in the ranking for the first time, in previous years he never appeared [22]. Another list by New Statesman surveying the all time top 10 world dictators, put Musharraf at #7, ahead of even Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler.

A lot of people ask me why I detest the President - for no reasons other than this: how has the quality of my life improved? I'm not any richer [rather, I keep getting poorer - damn inflation], I'm not healthier [they've cut down all the trees remember?] and I'm not any wiser [our educational system is a farce]. He promised us change, and like sentimental fools, we believed him. Seven years later, I wonder what really was the defining factor that made us change our perspective on the man.

A woman? Have rights? NOOOOOOOO!!!

More than 20 years after the Hudood Ordinance was introduced into the Pakistani Constitution, the Federal Shariat Court has realized that its time to ensure the rights of the Pakistani women. Where were you all these years, when women were being sent to jail left right and centre if they dared accuse someone of raping them. And no matter what government we have in Pakistan, be it headed by a political party or by the military, no one will ever have the guts to repeal this idiotic law.

And that, in a nutshell, is classic Pakistani hypocrisy.

Today marks 5 years of speculation, 5 years of political turmoil, 5 years of depression for my pro-PML (N) grandmother and 5 years of happiness for Musharraf.

Queen Elizabeth is our greatest enemy? And all this time we've been hating Bush. Kahuta, aim all nuclear missiles to Buckingham Palace. I repeat, your new target is now Buckingham Palace, not the White House.

Nawaz is back.

This just in from Geo: The President of Pakistan has decided to give Nawaz Sharif a passport. Apparently the decision was made on humanitarian grounds, probably after Nawaz's son fell ill while in Saudi Arabia. Sit back, and strap on the seat belts, because this is going to get entertaining.
